Story Mission Continues Helping Hand Alzheimer's Guestbook

AMIE’S MISSION  We are proud to be part of an organization whose mission leads us directly to Alzheimer’s victims and their families.  While there are many other noteworthy organizations dedicated to issues pertaining to Alzheimer’s, our approach is geared toward providing comfort, love and happiness, if only briefly, directly to the victims of Alzheimer’s.  We do this by going to nursing homes and personally giving the patients Muttsys, along with hugs and words of encouragement to the families.  On the surface our efforts may appear to be of little consequence in the tremendous fight against Alzheimer’s, but in reality, only by being at the nursing homes and seeing patients’ faces when they receive their Muttsys can you understand how so many Alzheimer’s victims need love and attention.

Amie’s does not have the financial resources to fight the war against Alzheimer’s as a disease, nor have we chosen that as our mission.  Instead, our volunteers are dedicated to personally bringing a little bit of joy and dignity into the lives of those with Alzheimer’s.

Muttsys made by Gund are soft, lovable lap companions.  Muttsys are nearly 20" long and can lie flat on the lap of a loved one in a wheelchair or tag cheerfully along with them in their walkers, held only by a leg or tail – and they do!  It is no wonder these precious cuddly dogs are so loved and warmly received by their owners!  Back to Top

Harriet Torey - 1906 - 1996
In Dedication - For Whom the Muttsy Mission exists.

THE STORY BEHIND THE MUTTSY MISSION While visiting Alzheimer’s patients in nursing homes in 1996 the Christmas following the loss of my mother, I noticed a lady in a wheelchair with a “Muttsy” lying on her lap.  It was painfully obvious this little companion was dearly loved, for its coat had been petted nearly flat.  It was this image riveted firmly in my  mind that provided the inspiration  to embark on a mission to provide Muttsys for other Alzheimer’s victims.
The organization was founded in honor of my mother, Harriet Torrey, who was a schoolteacher for many years in one-room schoolhouses in the Thumb Area of Michigan.
As one of Mother’s many care givers, I lived and fought the battle of Alzheimer’s daily, along with her for several years. During her last months, Mother called all of us “Amie”, so it only seemed fitting to call the organization created in her memory, the name she had called so often.
This is a cause to which I am deeply committed.  Since scientific medical data now confirms children of Alzheimer’s victims are more likely to develop the disease than the general population, regretfully, my family may someday benefit from my efforts in this endeavor.

Each time I place a Muttsy in the arms or on the lap of one of these very special people it is like fixing my mother a cup of tea..... and together we have now fixed her over 2,000 cups of tea.  Mother would be so proud!

THE MUTTSY MISSION CONTINUES Alzheimer’s affects more than four million Americans and forever changes the lives of millions more loved ones who care for them. While there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s, we at Amie’s now know these little Muttsys bring immeasurable hours of comfort and companionship to those who receive them.
Through the support of Amie’s Friends and Family, Amie’s will continue its mission of delivering Muttsys to nursing homes and responding to requests by families who have a loved one with Alzheimer’s.
The compelling story of the Muttsy Mission is shared with civic organizations, churches, support groups and other gatherings, to bring awareness of the program to the community and solicit their support to enable us to distribute Muttsys to Alzheimer's Patients in their area. The story is a heart warming account of Fran's own painful walk with her mother down a dark lonely road which is the same road that all family members travel with their loved one afflicted with Alzheimer's.  Your audience will not be disappointed with this program.  Muttsys are free to those with Alzheimer's and we rely entirely on Donations to fill the many requests that we have.  Therefore, sharing the Muttsy Mission Story with community organizations, churches, clubs and other gatherings, is very important.
To arrange for the Muttsy Mission Story to be shared at your meeting, association, club gathering or other type of event, or to arrange a Muttsy Distribution at a Nursing home in your area, please call or send an email to the Muttsy Mission office.
